Flashback: Russell Brand foretold Kanye West-Taylor Swift blowup at 2009 MTV VMAs

With Russell Brand set to emcee the 21st annual MTV Movie Awards on June 3, let’s recall the last time he emceed a kudofest for the cablecaster. That was the 2009 edition of the MTV Video Music Awards. In the clip below, Brand takes on a tour of the primo seats in Radio City Music Hall, commenting on the celebs that will soon be sitting in them.

He gives an affectionate tap to the placard with Katy Perry‘s pic on it (the pair began their ill-fated romance at the after party) and has fun with a few of the other big names. Then he sees where Kanye West will be sitting and says, “I love Kanye. Kanye’s going to be watching, ‘No, no, I’m not enjoying this.’ I hope he’s in a better mood when the event starts.”

As we all know, West made a spectacle of himself that night, interrupting Taylor Swift‘s acceptance speech for Female Video of the Year (“You Belong With Me”) to proclaim that Beyonce deserved to win for “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).” Minutes later, she did claim the big prize of the night — Video of the Year — but her victory was spoiled by his bad behavior.
