Seven sci-tech achievements contending for Oscars

The Sci-Tech committee of the motion picture academy just released the preliminary list of achievements under consideration for awards this year.

These contenders, as detailed below, are being publicized in advance of the Aug. 28 deadline so that those individuals or companies with similar advances can submit themselves for consideration.

Following a comprehesive review of the entries, the committee will meet in December to vote on them and make recommendations to the Board of Governors which will have the final say as to the level of recognition be it certificate, plaque or Academy Award statue.

The kudos will be bestowed in a ceremony at the Beverly Wilshire on Feb. 9. Last year, sci-fi film darling Milla Jovovich (pictured above) presided over the festivties.

The methods or devices currently under consideration are:

  • Tissue: A Physically-Based Character Simulation Framework (Weta Digital)
  • Zviz: Previsualization System (Lucasfilm)
  • Light: Lighting Tool (PDI Dreamworks)
  • Wavelet Turbulence for Fluid Simulation (University of California, Santa Barbara)
  • Planar Tracking: mocha and Enabling Technology (Imagineer Systems Ltd.)
  • Cine VCLX Portable Power System (Anton/Bauer)
  • Matthews MAX Menace Arm (Matthews Studio Equipment)
