The two teasers for “The Master” focused on Joaquin Phoenix and his character Freddie Sutton’s days as a drifter. However, the new theatrical trailer for this Paul Thomas Anderson picture gives us a longer look at Oscar champ Philip Seymour Hoffman as the title character, Lancaster Dodd, and three-time nominee Amy Adams as Mary Sue, his dutiful wife.
All the talent, including Anderson, is making a strong showing in our early Oscar handicapping. And the film, due out Oct. 12, is in a close race with Steven Spielberg‘s biopic “Lincoln” for Best Picture.

The parallels of Dodd to Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard are pronounced. As Dodd says to Sutton, “I am a writer, a doctor, a nuclear physicist, a theoretical philosopher, but above all I am a man, a hopelessly inquisitive man, just like you.” Hubbard often introduced himself in similar fashion.
And Adams bears a strong resemblance to Hubbard’s third wife, also named Mary Sue. She is wary of Sutton, who becomes the indispensable right-hand man to Dodd as he launches his new religion.
