First look: ‘The Master’ poster previews kaleidoscope of complications

Paul Thomas Anderson‘s highly anticipated film “The Master” is now confirmed to compete at the Venice filmfest, unspooling in 70 mm on Sept. 1. It is likely to be screened in the same format as a Special Presentation at the Toronto filmfest the following week before opening on Sept. 14.

The film follows Freddie Sutton (Joaquin Phoenix), a drifter who falls under the spell of the charismatic religious leader Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and his dutiful wife Mary Sue (Amy Adams).

All three stars feature on the new poster (after the break) which makes use of a kaleidoscope to convey the complexity of Anderson’s script which traces the rise of a new religion similar to Scientology.

In our early Oscar predictions, three-time nominee Adams is locked in a tight race with Anne Hathaway (“Les Miserables”) for Best Supporting Actress. Oscar champ Hoffman (“Capote,” 2005) and two-time contender Phoenix are both among the top five in the Best Actor category, which is led by two-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis (“Lincoln”). While that Steven Spielberg biopic is just ahead of “The Master” for Best Picture, Anderson is in first for helming.
