Watch Michael Fassbender embrace pure evil in ’12 Years a Slave’

In “12 Years a Slave,” Michael Fassbender plays a Southern plantation owner who rapes and tortures his slaves and the actor doesn’t shrink from portraying the embodiment of pure evil.

“I wanted to bring him close to the audience as opposed to distancing him from the audience, because that would be too easy — ‘Oh well, that guy’s terrible, he’s got nothing to do with me,'” Fassbender tells Gold Derby. “I wanted the audience to perhaps catch glimpses of themselves in him even if it was for a brief millisecond, that they would see a human being there that they could understand and recognize.”

Below watch the rest of our interview, in which Fassbender also reflects on working with director Steve McQueen and the complexities of his on-screen marriage to Sarah Paulson.
