Razzies battle for Worst Picture: ‘After Earth’ vs. ‘The Lone Ranger’

This year’s Worst Picture race at the Razzies is turning into a battle between two of the summer’s biggest bombs: “After Earth” and “The Lone Ranger.”

Of our five Experts who have logged predictions for this celebration of the best of the worst, two are backing each of these film follies:

Michael Musto (Gawker, Out.com) and Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby) say “hi-ho” NO to “The Lone Ranger,” the rancid remake of the 1940s movie serial and 1950s TV classic which has the dubious distinction of being Johnny Depp‘s first flop for Disney.

And Susan Wloszczyna (RogerEbert.com) and I like the looks of the sci-fi stinker “After Earth,”  Will Smith‘s ill-advised attempt to turn teen son Jaden Smith into a movie star.

Our fifth Expert — Edward Douglas (ComingSoon) — opts for the star-studded debacle that was “Movie 43.”

Three of our Editors Chris Beachum, Marcus Dixon and Daniel Montgomery — join the chorus hissing at “After Earth” while two EditorsMatt Noble and David Schnelwar — shoot down “Lone Ranger” with a silver bullet.

Among our Top 24 Users at predicting last year’s Razzies, 13 back “After Earth” while seven support “Movie 43” and two go for “The Lone Ranger.”

And for All Users, “After Earth” is the top pick for worst pic, with almost 60% of the vote, followed by “Movie 43” with about 20% and “The Lone Ranger” with 10%.
