Drama Desk Awards nominations led by ‘Giant,’ ‘Hands on a Hardbody’

Nominations for the 58th annual edition of the Drama Desk Awards were announced Monday. Two shuttered musicals — the short-lived Broadway tuner “Hands on a Hardbody” and the off-Broadway hit “Giant” — lead with nine nods apiece. (See full list of nominations here.)

Matilda,” the Olivier-winning tuner which is likely to lead Tuesday’s Tony nominations, earned seven nominations as did the rialto revival of 1986 Best Musical winner “The Mystery of Edwin Drood” and the off-Broadway remount of 1994 Tony champ “Passion.”

Also cited by the Drama Desk were our frontrunners for lead performances in playsTom Hanks (“Lucky Guy“) and Cicely Tyson (“The Trip to Bountiful“).

And while “Pippin” reaped six bids, including Best Musical Revival, its leading lady Patina Miller was snubbed. Her consolation prize is a plum one as she remains our frontrunner for the Tony

Winners will be revealed on May 19 in a ceremony at Gotham’s Town Hall.
