Who will win Best Pop Solo Performance at Grammys?

Our two music awards editors, David Schnelwar and Darrin Dortch, agree on the winner of Best Pop Solo Performance at this Sunday’s Grammys.

Adele – “Set Fire To The Rain” — David, Darrin
Kelly Clarkson – “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)”
Carly Rae Jepsen – “Call Me Maybe”
Katy Perry – “Wide Awake”
Rihanna – “Where Have You Been”

David’s analysis
This is Katy Perry’s fifth consecutive Pop Solo nomination without a win. It is her only nomination this year. Perry is not likely to win this year.

Rihanna failed to receive an expected nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album. This is the first time she has been nominated in this category.

Historically, the winner of this category is either nominated in the General Field or for Best Pop Vocal Album. Following this pattern, the race should be between Kelly Clarkson and Carly Rae Jepsen

If anyone can break this pattern, it would be Adele. Her 2011 album, “21” carried over to become the #1 album of 2012 as well. She won this race last year with “Someone Like You.”

Darrin’s analysis
Kelly Clarkson received multiple nominations this year, including Record and Song of the Year bids for “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You).”

But there’s still residual love left over for Adele who had the year’s top selling album and is on track to win an Oscar for “Skyfall,” the acclaimed James Bond theme.
