Indie Spirits predix: ’12 Years a Slave’ overwhelmingly ahead for Best Picture

12 Years a Slave” is the overwhelming favorite to win Best Picture at the Independent Spirit Awards.

All five of our Oscarologists who have weighed in with their picks for these prizes predict it to take the top award as do our six Editors, 23 of last year’s Top 24 Users and more than 90% of All Users.

That tidal wave of support gives the film, which reaped seven Spirit bids in all, odds of 1 to 10 to prevail at this kudofest on March 1, the day before the Academy Awards.

Its closest rival in terms of nominations — “Nebraska” with six — has odds of 33 to 1 to pull off an upset in this race.

Two of the other nominees — “Frances Ha” and “Inside Llewyn Davis” — have odds of 50 to 1 while the fifth contender — “All is Lost” — trails with odds of 100 to 1.

In the 28-year history of these kudos, only two Spirit winners — — “Platoon” (1986) and “The Artist” (2011) — went on to take home the top Oscar too. Could “12 Years a Slave” be the third? Currently, it sits atop our Oscars Best Picture prediction chart leading “Gravity” with odds of 7/2 versus 11/2.
