Steve Pond’s Oscar predictions: ‘American Hustle,’ Robert Redford, Cate Blanchett

Top Oscarologist Steve Pond (The Wrap) has weighed in with his intial predictions for this year’s winners in the top eight races. (See all his predix here and compare them with other experts here.)

Pond is predicting “American Hustle” will win Best Picture while its helmer David O. Russell will finally take home Best Director with his third bid.

Both of those choices line up with the majority of our 11 experts. Thom Geier (EW), Tariq Khan (Fox News), Paul Sheehan (Gold Derby), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone) and Jeff Wells (Hollywood Elsewhere) all tout this 1970s political drama for Best Picture as well as Russell.

Pond is the fifth of our 10 experts to tip Robert Redford as Best Actor for his virtual one-man show as a shipwreck survivor struggling against the elements in “All is Lost.”

He makes it eight out of 10 for those backing Cate Blanchett as Best Actress for her performance as a woman on the verge in “Blue Jasmine.” However, Pond is the only expert who thinks that film’s writer/director Woody Allen will win his fourth Oscar for Best Original Screenplay#>

He is also the lone expert touting Cannes Best Actor champ Bruce Dern to take the supporting prize for “Nebraska.” Tom Hanks has a plurality of support for “Saving Mr. Banks.”

Pond is in the majority of seven experts who think Oprah Winfrey will win Best Supporting Actress for “The Butler.”

And he is one of three experts to predict that Tracy Letts will win an Oscar for adapting his 2008 Pulitzer and Tony-winning play “August: Osage County.” A plurality are picking “The Wolf of Wall Street” for the win.
