1. Ma Petite (Jyoti Amge) is crushed to death.
EPISODE: “Test of Strength”
The saddest death in the entire “AHS” franchise occurred when closeted Dell (Michael Chiklis) crushed Ma Petite because he was being blackmailed by Stanley (Denis O’Hare). Ma Petite was the most pure, innocent character on the show, which means we’re still wiping tears from our eyes over her unjust demise.

2. Dandy (Finn Wittrock) kills his first victim.
EPISODE: “Edward Mordrake, Part 2”
You never forget your first time. This season’s breakout character is without a doubt Dandy, and we were there the moment his bloody journey began as he killed his first victim, Dora (Patti LaBelle). But, let’s face it, the housekeeper kind of had it coming after taunting him over and over again. Watch our webchat with Wittrock below.

3. Ethel (Kathy Bates) takes a knife to the head.
EPISODE: “Blood Bath”
After Ethel found out that Elsa (Jessica Lange) kidnapped the twins (Sarah Paulson) and possibly killed Ma Petite, she tried to shoot her but Elsa fought back and threw a knife into her head. Elsa and Stanley then set up the body to look like Ethel was decapitated in a car accident, making this the second season in a row that Bates got to play a beheaded character.

4. Gloria (Frances Conroy) is shot, drained of blood, then made into two-headed puppet.
EPISODE: “Blood Bath”
While Gloria’s actual death wasn’t that exciting — she was shot by her loving son Dandy — it’s what happened afterwards that stuck with viewers. Dandy drained her blood and poured it into his bathtub, then he sewed another woman’s head onto his mother’s body to recapture the excitement of having a two-headed woman in his home.

5. Twisty the Clown (John Carroll Lynch) is taken to the other side.
EPISODE: “Edward Mordrake, Part 2”
Despite being the season’s scariest villain, Twisty was somewhat redeemed in our eyes when we found out the truth about his broken background. The ghostly Edward Mordrake (Wes Bentley) took pity on Twisty and killed him so that he’d return as one of his spiritual troupe members.

6. Salty (Christopher Neiman) passes away in his sleep.
EPISODE: “Orphans”
Pepper’s (Naomi Grossman) raw, emotional reaction to her friend’s natural death proved that the show doesn’t need blood and guts to make a scene stand out. (It never hurts, though.)
