‘Archer’ co-creator Matt Thompson discusses ‘crazy’ Emmys and new season [Exclusive Video]

FX’s hit animated program “Archer” begins its sixth season on Thursday, January 8, coming off the program’s first ever Emmy nomination for Best Animated Program this past summer.

Creator Adam Reed teases upcoming sixth season of FX hit ‘Archer

In our recent webcam chat (watch it below), Matt Thompson, co-creator and executive producer of the series, touched on several subjects, including the show’s sharp creative turn in its previous season; the concept of “Archer: Vice” came about “frankly, because we were bored,” he says, adding, “We do the show to make ourselves laugh and to do things that we think are interesting, so we decided, fuck it, let’s just change everything and see what happens.”

Of the experience of finally being nominated at the Emmys, Thompson says simply, “It was crazy.” “Archer” was nominated alongside “Futurama,” “South Park,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and the eventual winner, “Bob’s Burgers.”

But even though they didn’t prevail, Thompson couldn’t have been happier for the winning program. “If there is one other show where I know the people that make and work on another cartoon show, it’s ‘Bob’s,’ and I really, really have a great respect for Loren [Bouchard] and all their actors and the guys at Bento Box as well, and I couldn’t have been any happier for another show.” The only downside seems to be that his kids taunt him about how “Bob’s Burgers” is an Emmy-winning program whenever he watches it with them.

Thomspon also discussed some upcoming stories for the new season, including Sterling Archer meeting Lana’s parents (to be voiced by CCH Pounder and Keith David) and the introduction of Edie (Emmy-nominee Allison Tolman from “Fargo“), sister of Pamela Poovey, the head of HR at the spy agency. Joining that list of special guest stars will be Matthew Rhys (“The Americans“) in a storyline involving Welsh separatists.
