‘Dancing with the Stars’ sends home its second contestant — was it a shocker?

Week two of “Dancing With the Stars” was a mixed bag. First-week standouts Alfonso Ribeiro and Sadie Robertson lost a step, but still finished among the top half of competitors, while Michael Waltrip failed to impress and wound up at the bottom of the leaderboard.

‘DWTS’ recap: Did last week’s top performers live up to high expectations?

But just like last week, when lowest scorer Betsey Johnson was spared elimination at the expense of Lolo Jones, finishing in last place with judges didn’t mean elimination for Waltrip. At the end of Tuesday night’s results show, it came down to him and talk show host Tavis Smiley, but it was Smiley who got the axe.

Smiley impressed judges in the first week of competition, but in week two he struggled to balance his training schedule with the demands of a book tour. He worried he wouldn’t have time to learn his routine, but even though the judges had mixed opinions about his cha cha with pro partner Sharna Burgess, he only finished one point shy of his premiere-night foxtrot: 28, down from 29.
