David Walton on ‘big heart’ of ‘About a Boy’ (Exclusive Video)

David Walton plays successful songwriter and bachelor Will Freeman on NBC’s single camera sitcom About a Boy.” During our recent webcam chat (watch below), the actor talked candidly about the unexpected growth of his character over the first breakout season of the show: “Will on the outside is this very selfish, very self-involved immature guy who doesn’t admit he really cares about anything, but on the inside, he’s slowly waking up and he’s actually got quite a big heart that he never really realized.”

The show centres on Walton’s character, whose perfect world is turned upside down when single mom Fiona (Oscar and Emmy nominee Minnie Driver) and her 11-year-old son Marcus (Benjamin Stockham) move in next door. It is based on the 1998 Nick Hornby book and the 2002 film starring Hugh Grant. The rookie program is created by Emmy winner Jason Katims (“Friday Night Lights,” “Parenthood”).

He readlily admitted: “I’ve always liked playing characters that show one thing, but are something pretty different on the inside, or they don’t even know, but then they’re slowly revealing; the circumstances and the events around them reveal who they truly are, and that is the journey of the show.”

Walton had a number of failed attempts before “About a Boy,” which was recently given a season two pickup. “It’s brutal and emotional,” Walton said as he recalled the neverending audition process. “When I got the call that we had a season two, I let out some very embarrassing war scream I think!”

Looking forward, he wants the writers to throw as much as they can at him: “I like it when Will’s life gets completely screwed!” Walton laughs. “The more that goes wrong the better! I’d like some horrible, but still funny, stuff to happen. Because that’s always the most fun. Everything blowing up in your face.”
