The Daytime Emmy reels for Best Actor are available for viewing online. I’ve watched all five. Peter Bergman (“The Young and the Restless“) has more Best Actor nominations than anyone in the awards’ history. Will he add another trophy to his collection?
Length of Reel: 9:54
Synopsis: Jack Abbott (Bergman) confronts Phyllis (Emmy-winner Michelle Stafford) about kissing his son, which leads her to confess that her teenage daughter Summer is his biological child. He is outraged by the deception and is prepared to take his first drink since he battled for sobriety, but is talked down by the ghost of his father, John (Jerry Douglas).
Analysis: “What kind of person lies about the father of their child?” Jack demands in this episode, which is ironic given how many of this year’s acting nominees submitted episodes confessing just that. In this episode, which mirrors Hunter King‘s Younger Actress reel, in which she learns the same shocking truth, Jack is heartbroken that he has lost years he could have spent bonding with his daughter.
The raw emotions give his reel plenty of impact, especially at his best moment, when Phyllis leaves and he finally breaks down and cries. His moment with his father’s ghost — it may not be clear to unfamiliar voters that John isn’t really physically present — gives him an added moment of indignation. Bergman, a three-time winner and the all-time nominations leader in the category (19 bids and counting), has certainly proven popular with voters, though he has also lost more Best Actor contests than anyone else.
