Here’s an exclusive sneak peek at HBO’s 2014 Emmy campaign

In a Gold Derby exclusive, premium network HBO has provided their Emmy Awards campaign for 2014 with category placements.

One of the shockers in recent weeks was the news that “True Detective” would be competing as Best Drama Series. It only aired eight episodes earlier this year and will have a completely new cast and storyline next time, so many expected it to follow the anthology path of “American Horror Story” as a miniseries. Stars Matthew McConaughey, reigning Oscar winner for “Dallas Buyers Club,” and Woody Harrelson, a past Emmy champ for his supporting work on “Cheers,” are competing against each other as leading actors.

It’s Emmy war as ‘True Detective’ battles for Best Drama Series

That is the only newcomer on the dramatic side. HBO’s hottest new comedy might be “Silicon Valley” from creator Mike Judge (“Office Space,” “King of the Hill”). Its only lead will be Thomas Middleditch, while the remaining regulars are all in supporting. Other rookies are “Family Tree” (from Christopher Guest), “Getting On” (starring 3-time Emmy winner Laurie Metcalf), “Hello Ladies” (from “The Office” co-creator Stephen Merchant), and “Looking” (starring Jonathan Groff).

5 reasons why ‘Silicon Valley’ will win Best Comedy Series Emmy

Looking back at last year’s Emmys, HBO had “Game of Thrones” nominated as Best Drama Series along with supporting players Peter Dinklage and Emilia Clarke. Jeff Daniels (“The Newsroom“) and Bobby Cannavale (“Boardwalk Empire“) won the lead and supporting acting categories.

On the comedy side, the cabler earned Best Comedy Series bids for “Girls” and “Veep.” Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Tony Hale prevailed for their roles on “Veep”, while co-star Anna Chlumsky was also nodded. Other nominees were Lena Dunham and Adam Driver (“Girls”) plus Laura Dern (from the cancelled “Enlightened“).
