Gabrielle Union on being ‘completely imperfect’ on ‘Being Mary Jane’ (Exclusive Video)

“It’s okay to be completely imperfect,” declared Gabrielle Union during our recent webcam chat (watch below) when asked what the message was of her hit BET drama series “Being Mary Jane.” As she explained, “Life is extremely messy and not perfect and not tied up. The loose ends are very rarely tied up, so that’s what we offer.”

Why did she shift from her successful film career (“Good Deeds,” “Think Like a Man”) to this full-time TV role as a talk show host in search of the perfect man? “This was a great opportunity because it just so happened to have an amazing character, great writing, a creative team that I love and respect and the check cleared!” The show was created by Mara Brock Akil, the talent behind the long-running laffers “Girlfriends” and “The Game.”

For her performance in the feature-length pilot that aired last summer, Union won a NAACP Image Award, which she found to be a very humbling experience. And she is in contention for the Best Actress prize at the BET Awards, which will air on June 29.

The network has sent TV academy voters a DVD that includes the pilot, episode three (“The Huxtables Have Fallen”) and episode eight (“Uber Love), which was the season finale. She revealed that last one was her favorite because of all those juicy scenes opposite her real-life friends Lisa Vidal and Robinne Lee.

“You can expect a lot of surprises,” Union teased about the second season currently shooting in Atlanta. “If you thought she was off the chain or out of pocket the first season, oh, you’ve seen nothing.” She has also found the new season particularly challenging from an acting perspective, assessing, “It’s the most raw and most vulnerable I’ve been as an actor.”
