‘Gone Girl’ trailer: Return to Oscars for Ben Affleck and David Fincher?

Will Ben Affleck and David Fincher make a return to the Oscars next year?

They could be contenders again for one of 2014’s most anticipated films, “Gone Girl,” based on the bestselling novel by Gillian Flynn, who also penned the screenplay. It opens on October 3, the same time of year that Fincher’s “The Social Network” (2010) and Affleck’s “Argo” (2012) opened before they went on to win multiple Oscars.

Affleck is looking to win a third Oscar — his first for acting following wins for Best Original Screenplay (“Good Will Hunting,” 1997) and Best Picture (“Argo,” 2012). However, Fincher is still in search of his first; he earned directing bids for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” (2008) and “Social Network” (2010), losing the first to Danny Boyle (“Slumdog Millionaire”) and the second to “The King’s Speech” helmer Tom Hooper. Will the academy make it up to him this year?

Gone Girl” is a mystery about a husband (Affleck) who comes under suspicion after his wife (Rosamund Pike) goes missing on their anniversary. Kim Dickens, Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry, and Sela Ward also star.
