Emmys showdown: What happens when co-stars compete in same category? [Photo Gallery]

Pity poor Johnny Galecki. Sure, he is raking in lots of green for starring on “The Big Bang Theory” but, when it comes to collecting Emmy gold, he lost his only bid for Best Comedy Actor to co-star Jim Parsons back in 2011. Parsons, who had also won in 2010, prevailed again last year. And he is predicted to win a record-tying fourth award this year, while Galecki is sitting in seventh place on our chart

However, Galecki should take comfort in knowing that he is in good company.

Among the other famous folk that had to act happy when their co-stars beat them at the Emmys were “NYPD Blue” leading men David Caruso and Jimmy Smits who both lost to Dennis Franz. For Caruso, it was just in 1994 as he exited the series after just one season while his replacement, Smits, had to endure losses in 1996, 1997 and 1999.

Of course, there have been times when co-stars each ended up winning Emmys. As Betty White has recounted, all was well on the set of “The Golden Girls” only after co-stars Rue McClanahan and Bea Arthur had each claimed Best Comedy Actress in the years following her win in 1986.

Take a tour through our photo gallery below to find out what happened when 26 other groups of co-star nominees battled in the lead categories at the Emmys.
