A transgender actress and LGBT rights activist, Cox plays Sophia Burset, who is in prison for credit card fraud and fighting for the medication she needs to maintain her gender transition. For her performance, she was nominated for a Critics’ Choice TV Award for Best Comedy Supporting Actress and made history at the Emmys with her bid for Best Comedy Guest Actress: she’s the award’s first openly transgender acting nominee.

Cox also recently made history by appearing on the cover of Time magazine for a story about advances in transgender rights; she was the first transgender person ever to land a Time cover. In addition, she received the Stephen F. Kolzak Award from GLAAD for promoting equality.
