Oscar rivals ‘Dallas Buyers Club,’ ‘Bad Grandpa’ win Makeup & Hairstyling Awards

Dallas Buyers Club,” the Oscar frontrunner for Best Makeup & Hairstyling, won the Period/Character Makeup award at the guild kudos on Saturday while one of its Academy Award rivals, “Bad Grandpa,” claimed the Special Makeup Effects prize. The third Oscar nominee, “The Lone Ranger,” was shut out but that film’s star, Johnny Depp, was feted with the Distinguished Artisan Award. 

Among the other film winners at the first edtion of these kudos in almost a decade: “American Hustle” (Period/Character Hairstyling), “Prisoners” (Contemporary Makeup) and “The Butler” (Contemporary Hairstyling). 

On the TV side, “Behind the Candelabra” won both the hair and makeup awards for telefilms and miniseries. The contemporary series awards went to “The Voice” (hairstyling) and “Breaking Bad” (makeup) while the period prizes went to “Vikings” (hairstyling) and “Boardwalk Empire” (makeup). “The Walking Dead” won the special makeup effects race.
