In the 85-year history of the Academy Awards, only 39 performers have won at least two Oscars for acting. Six more actors and actresses now have the chance to join that group.
Previous one-time champs Christian Bale (“American Hustle“), Cate Blanchett (“Blue Jasmine“), Sandra Bullock (“Gravity“), Judi Dench (“Philomena“), Jennifer Lawrence (“American Hustle”) and Julia Roberts (“August: Osage County“) are all looking to add another trophy to their mantle this year.
And three-time past Oscar winner Meryl Streep (“August: Osage County”) is at a whole other level. She extended her record for most nominations to 18. If she wins this year, she would join Katharine Hepburn as the only four-time acting champ in Academy Awards history.
Of the 39 double Oscar winners, 22 are still living: Michael Caine, Daniel Day-Lewis, Olivia de Havilland, Robert De Niro, Sally Field, Jane Fonda, Jodie Foster, Gene Hackman, Tom Hanks, Dustin Hoffman, Glenda Jackson, Jessica Lange, Jack Nicholson, Sean Penn, Luise Rainer, Maggie Smith, Kevin Spacey, Meryl Streep, Hilary Swank, Christoph Waltz, Denzel Washington, and Dianne Wiest.
All of these but de Havilland, Hackman, Jackson and Rainer are still making movies and could yet win a third Oscar.
