Pharrell’s ‘Happy’ should hold off Eminem to win Male Video at MTV VMAs

Pharrell Williams has yet to win at the MTV Video Music Awards despite five previous nominations – including four last year for collaborating on Robin Thicke‘s “Blurred Lines” – but our odds expect that to change this year thanks to the video for his hit single “Happy.” That song from “Despicable Me 2” also earned him an Oscar nod last year. He has a strong lead on our racetrack for Best Male Video, getting 8/5 odds.

But even if he loses for “Happy,” he has a second chance to win this year thanks to “Sing,” on which he collaborates with singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. That video gets 11/2 odds from our predictors.

Either way, Pharrell will have to get past Eminem, who holds the records in the category for most nominations (nine) and most wins (three). This year, he competes for “The Monster,” his collaboration with another VMAs favorite, Rihanna. They rank second in the category with 4/1 odds.

Ranking fourth with 6/1 odds is John Legend‘s “All of Me.” This is his first VMA nomination since 2005, when he earned a trio of bids, including Male Video, for his breakthrough song “Ordinary People.” He has yet to win.

Newcomer Sam Smith is nominated for the first time and ranks fifth with 9/1 odds for “Stay with Me.” The video is also nominated for the Artist to Watch award.
