News Nuggets: Power of Women honorees are Viola Davis, Jane Fonda, Reese Witherspoon

This year’s Power of Women honorees will be Viola Davis, Jane Fonda, Jennifer Lopez, Reese Witherspoon, and Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley. They will be saluted on October 10 at a sixth annual luncheon as Lifetime Impact Honorees for their humanitarian efforts. The event is co-sponsored by Lifetime Television and Variety. The luncheon will host 500 Hollywood insiders with a VIP cocktail reception before and after. Variety

The two main guests of honor at this year’s New York Film Festival will be actors Richard Gere and Ethan Hawke. They will each be hosted as part of the festival’s “An Evening with…” series. Hawke will be honored on September 30 and currently has the documentary “Seymour: An Introduction” and the film “Boyhood.” Gere’s tribute will be on October 8, and he currently stars in the film “Time Out of Mind.” Previous honorees have included Pedro Almodovar, Cate Blanchett, David Cronenberg, Ralph Fiennes, and Nicole Kidman. Broadway executives reverse their decision to not honor the late Joan Rivers. After closed-door negotiations, they had chosen not to dim the lights of the New York theaters as they traditionally do for Broadway stars and active behind-the-scenes stalwarts. Rivers had starred in three shows during her career and been a visible champion of the arts. Several theaters said they would defy the order, so now they will all officially dim their lights Tuesday night at 6:45. USA Today

Bill Murray will not actually appear in a “Ghostbusters 3” film, but he is offering his picks for a new cast. With a rumored all-female plot, Murray suggests Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Linda Cardellini, and Emma Stone for the characters. Original director Ivan Reitman (father of Jason Reitman) indicates that hot director/writer Paul Feig (“Bridesmaids”) will most likely helm the project. Huffington Post

Apple is giving away the new U2 album “Songs of Innocence” free through October 13. Any iTunes customer in 119 countries can download the album featuring 11 new songs from the Irish rockers. The company announced the move after the band performed at a Tuesday press event. E! Online

The Producers Guild will honor Lionsgate executive Jon Feltheimer with their 2015 Milestone Award. The tribute will take place January 24 at the 26th annual PGA Awards. His company has been behind such films as “The Hunger Games” franchise, “Divergent,” “Precious,” and “Crash.” TV shows have included “Mad Men,” “Orange is the New Black,” and “Weeds.” The Wrap

Taiwan is submitting the film “Ice Poison” as their official 2014 entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Oscars. Directed by Midi Z, the movie is about a young Burmese woman who becomes a drug runner and hires an impoverished young man to be her driver. It has already screened at several international film festivals after debuting at Berlinale last February. Screen Daily
