Simon Helberg on ‘ups and downs’ of marriage on ‘Big Bang Theory’ (Exclusive Video)

Two seasons ago on “The Big Bang Theory,” Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg) finally married to longtime girlfriend Bernadette (Melissa Rauch). The union has had its rocky moments, and his wife might be slowly turning into his domineering, shrieking mother. In our recent webcam chat (watch below), Helberg admitted, “You hear her scream off screen and is even more threatening than his mother. You definitely get the sense that she’s in charge… and that’s definitely out of fear.”

As for the state of their marriage, he revealed, “Their ups and downs, that’s kind of what their relationship is. It is Howard putting his foot in his mouth, whether it’s something absurd or kids or his mother. He is just not able to full function without digging a little hole for himself to get in and eat crow.”

Howard is an aerospace engineer who went into space instead of a honeymoon. He hangs out with his scientist friends (played by three-time Emmy champ Jim ParsonsJohnny Galecki and Kunal Nayyar) and their neighbor Penny (Kaley Cuoco). He peppers his conservation with pop culture references and delights his pals with impressions of famous celebrities such as Nicolas Cage, Al Pacino, and Robin Williams.

Regarding the evolution of his character, the actor reflected, “This guy has a lot of maturing still to do. He’s an adult but only by age, and so he’s going to play video games, and he works with those guys still, and they go on adventures together. You don’t lose any of that because it’s all baby steps, so nobody matures to the point of not wanting to sit down and play X-Box or watch ‘Star Wars.'”
