What shows and performers missed out on Emmys boost from critics’ awards?

While the recent nominations by the two TV critics’ groups gave some shows and performers a higher profile in advance of next week’s Emmy balloting, others weren’t so fortunate. Among those who didn’t get much of a boost from the Television Critics Assn. (TCA) and/or the Critics’ Choice Television Awards (CCTA) were:

Brooklyn Nine-Nine” 
Despite barely appearing on any critics’ year-end top ten lists, the first-year sitcom scored TCA nominations for Best Comedy Series and New Program, suggesting that critics really came around to the show after its Golden Globe wins. However, this was called into question the next day, as supporting actor Andre Braugher earned the show’s only CCTA nomination.

Downton Abbey
Shut out at both awards for first time. 

Game of Thrones
Guest star Diana Rigg was the sole acting bid for the fantasy drama at the CCTA.

Lena Dunham was snubbed by the TCA after reaping a bid last year while Andrew Rannells earned the lone CCTA nomination this year, down from three last year.

House of Cards
The TCA nominated the show for Best Drama Series whie the CCTA cited Robin Wright for Best Drama Actress. MIA was Kevin Spacey.

Mad Men
Shut out at both awards for first time. 

Masters of Sex
While it earned a leading five nominations at the CCTA, this prestigious period piece was skunked by the TCA, even failing to score a New Program nomination against pedestrian drama “Sleepy Hollow.” 

Modern Family
Shut out by the TCA for the second straight year, the CCTA also snubbed this Emmy darling.

The Normal Heart
In a race to have the first word, TCA ballots were due nearly a week before this critically-acclaimed telefilm aired and before most reviews were published. As such, the most high-profile TV movie of the year was snubbed by the TCA, although it reaped a leading five nominations from the CCTA.

Parks and Recreation
A year after naming it Best Comedy Series, the TCA snubbed this laffer and the CCTA followed suit.

Silicon Valley
While it was skunked by the TCA, this HBO comedy made a comeback at the CCTA with three nominations. 

The TCA Awards, which take place July 19, is a private affair with the winners notified in advance. The CCTA ceremony on June 19, will be televised for the first time with winners revealed during the live ceremony on the CW.
