For many weeks on “The Voice,” we had assumed Pharrell Williams might be the winning coach for this season. After all, his status as the Producer of the Year at the Grammy Awards helped him to assemble somewhat of an all-star team contending on the NBC reality series.
That all came to a crashing end Tuesday night when both of his remaining artists, DaNica Shirey and Luke Wade, were eliminated by the home audience. The public whittled the top eight down to five contenders who will perform again next Monday, so that almost certainly means the end of Team Pharrell.
The other astounding fact is that coach Adam Levine has not lost a single artist in the past three shows. Matt McAndrew and Damien Lawson were completely safe Tuesday night, and Chris Jamison was saved by a last minute social media vote.
According to your predictions over the past few days, Shirey, Lawson, and Ryan Sill were the three projected to go home this week.(see chart at left). Wade was maybe the single most surprising ejection of the whole season.
The coaches this year are Levine (winner of the first and fifth seasons), Blake Shelton (champ for the second, third, and fourth seasons who has Craig Wayne Boyd remaining), and newcomers Williams and Gwen Stefani (who has Taylor John Williams remaining).
In the final portion of Tuesday’s show, the four at the bottom performed to be saved by social media votes:
Shirey sang “I’d Rather Go Blind” by Etta James.
Wade sang “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King.
Sill sang “Heaven” by Bryan Adams.
Jamison sang “Georgia on My Mind” by Ray Charles (and earned enough votes to stay).
Remember that Shirey, Sill, and Wade are not completely out of it (nor is coach Pharrell). All of the eliminated artists from the past three weeks (also including Anita Antoinette, Reagan James, Sugar Joans, and Jessie Pitts) will be invited back to perform again near the end of the season. One of those contenders will be saved by the public to join the three finalists as a “wild card,” so that leaves each one with a very slim chance.
