Emmy nominee Uzo Aduba (‘Orange is the New Black’): ‘I was going to quit acting’ (Exclusive Video)

Uzo Aduba is riding high as a first-time Emmy nominee as Best Comedy Guest Actress for her breakout role as Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren on “Orange is the New Black.” In our recent webcam chat (watch below), Aduba was quite candid about her struggles to make it, admitting “the day I got this job, I was going to quit acting.”

As she explained, “I had been trying that summer, for the very first time, to do film and television. I was not getting jobs and I was hurting from these nos, as if it had been years of nos, because I really want to do it. This day I went for an audition for [CBS drama] “Blue Bloods,” I got there and I was 20 minutes late. I had a really strong audition I thought, but I was like “you’re really not going to get this job, because you were 20 minutes late. And this is God, the universe, telling you that this is not for you. And you should not act, you should give up acting.”

“I gave it up and I said, ‘I quit. You win. I can’t do this anymore. And if you will direct me to where I’m supposed to go, I will go.’ And I got home, and an hour later, I got the phone call to do “Orange is the New Black”.”

Aduba is our frontrunner to take home an Emmy next month. (See odds breakdown.) In “Lesbian Request Denied,” the episode she submitted to Emmy judges, her loveable albeit unhinged character “Crazy Eyes” has set her sights on new inmate Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), serenading her in the prison yard and pursuing her throughout the episode.

“Overall, the thing I loved about her was the different levels,” Aduba revealed about her episode choice. “I learned Suzanne was a lover … and that is the space from which she operates. It’s not anything else other than to obtain what she loves. And she pulls out all the stops, by any means necessary. So for me, I loved all of her different tactics for obtaining it.”
