Emmys experts predict ‘Veep’ will keep ‘Modern Family’ from winning record sixth time

Eight of our Emmy experts — Debra Birnbaum (Variety), Eric Deggans (NPR), Joyce Eng (TV Guide), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Lynette Rice (Entertainment Weekly), Matt Roush (TV Guide), Ken Tucker (Yahoo) and me — have weighed in with their first predictions as to who will prevail on Sept. 20.

Six of us are predicting that “Veep” will win Best Comedy Series, thwarting the bid by “Modern Family” to claim a record sixth trophy. That support gives this HBO political satire odds of 4/9 to take home this top trophy on its fourth try.

Deggans stands alone as the only Expert forecasting victory for the ABC laffer. It has odds of only 13/2 to break its tie with “Frasier” as the most honored comedy at the Emmys.

Roush is touting “Transparent,” the freshman Amazon series. That vote, coupled with where the rest of us are ranking this show, gives it odds of 6/1 to pull off an upset.

The other four nominees — “Louie,” “Parks and Recreation,” “Silicon Valley” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” — are all at 100/1.
