Just before “Shark Tank” won the Emmy for Best Structured Reality Program at Saturday night’s Creative Arts ceremony (its second straight win in the category), star Lori Greiner and executive producer Clay Newbill chatted with Gold Derby about the show’s cultural impact (watch below).

“They take more than 40,000 entrepreneurs, they boil it down to the top 180 or so,” said Greiner about the hard work done by the producers, “and then they have to orchestrate a dramatic, informational, fantastic show out of these pitches … so I think they deserve [the Emmy], but I’m a little prejudiced.”
But Newbill doesn’t just want to produce an entertaining program. The show premiered in 2009, not long after the global financial crisis of 2008 put the economy into a recession, so “suddenly the economy, jobs and being an entrepreneur became very relevant,” he explained. “I think this show will pay dividends when 10 years from now the next Mark Zuckerberg says, ‘I was inspired to become an entrepreneur because I watched “Shark Tank” when I was a child.'”
“Shark Tank” is already a winner, but there’s one more reality category left to decide: Best Reality-Competition Series will be handed out at the primetime telecast on Sunday, September 20. Who do you think will win?
