Golden Globe nominations: Netflix is top TV network, HBO & Starz close behind

Out of all TV programmers in contention at the Golden Globes, the biggest haul was by an online streaming service, Netflix, which scored eight nominations. Premium cable networks HBO (seven) and Starz (six) follow close behind, while FX and another streaming service, Amazon Video, have five each.

Netflix’s haul includes nominations for both Best Comedy Series (“Orange is the New Black“) and Best Drama Series (“Narcos“), as well as acting noms for Uzo Aduba (“Orange”), Wagner Moura (“Narcos”), Aziz Ansari (“Master of None“), Lily Tomlin (“Grace and Frankie“), Robin Wright (“House of Cards“) and Ben Mendelsohn (“Bloodline“).

HBO also scored nominations in top programs categories: twice for Best Comedy (“Silicon Valley” and “Veep“) and once for Best Drama (“Game of Thrones“). Additionally it picked up acting noms for Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”) as well as movie/miniseries stars Oscar Isaac (“Show Me a Hero“), David Oyelowo (“Nightingale“) and Queen Latifah (“Bessie“).

The impressive showing for Starz includes a trio of nominations for “Outlander“: Best Drama Series and acting noms for Caitriona Balfe and Tobias Menzies. The network picked up two more for its miniseries “Flesh and Bone“: Best TV Movie/Limited Series and a nom for lead actress Sarah Hay. Its final nom was Best Comedy Actor for “Blunt Talk” star Patrick Stewart.

All five FX nominations were for its anthologies: “American Horror Story: Hotel” and “Fargo” for Best TV Movie/Miniseries, plus acting bids for Patrick Wilson and Kirsten Dunst (“Fargo”), as well as Lady Gaga (“AHS: Hotel”).

Amazon Video picked up three noms for “Transparent“: return bids for Best Comedy Series and Best Comedy Actor (Jeffrey Tambor), as well as a first supporting nom for Judith Light. More surprisingly, Amazon scored additional Comedy Series and Comedy Actor bids for “Mozart in the Jungle” and its star Gael Garcia Bernal.
