In the topsy-turvy Oscar race for Best Supporting Actor there have been few constants, but Sylvester Stallone has made a strong impression for reprising his Oscar-nominated role as Rocky Balboa in “Creed“? What happens at the Oscars remains to be seen, but he’s already out front to win at the Golden Globes.
The last eight Globe champs for Best Supporting Actor went on to win the Oscar, and now we Gold Derby Editors – who cover awards year-round – are giving him best odds to win this important precursor race. Five out of six of us – Marcus Dixon, Rob Licuria, Tom O’Neil, Paul Sheehan and I – declare him the frontrunner, giving him racetrack odds of 2/7.
This is Stallone’s first Golden Globe nomination since 39 years ago, when he was up for Best Film Drama Actor and Best Film Screenplay for the original “Rocky” in 1976. Just like he would at the Oscars, he lost Best Actor to Peter Finch (“Network”) and lost Best Screenplay to “Network” scribe Paddy Chayefsky. Will the Hollywood Foreign Press Association reward Stallone now for his creative comeback?
He faces Idris Elba (“Beasts of No Nation“), who is a double nominee this year – he also contends for his work in the TV movie “Luther” – and a past winner, having prevailed for “Luther” back in 2011. Editor Chris Beachum is currently predicting him to win, giving him 9/2 odds.
None of our editors are currently predicting any of the other three nominees to prevail: Michael Shannon (“99 Homes“), who ranks third with 50/1 odds; Mark Rylance (“Bridge of Spies“), in fourth place with 66/1 odds; or Paul Dano (“Love and Mercy“), who trails with 80/1 odds. This is the first Globe nomination for all three of those actors, though Rylance is a double-nominee this year like Elba; the British stage vet also contends for his performance in the TV miniseries “Wolf Hall.”
