Worried your favorite breakthrough star like Hozier or Meghan Trainor won’t win Best New Artist at the Grammys this year? Don’t worry, neither did Beyonce, Lady Gaga or Taylor Swift. Indeed, some of the biggest recording artists of all time didn’t win Grammys when they were new on the scene including Bob DylanBarbra Streisand and the Rolling Stones.

AMAs: Taylor Swift & Ed Sheeran lead nominations, Justin Bieber mostly snubbed

Hindsight is 20/20 when it comes to the Best New Artist prize. You can’t always tell who will have the most successful career based on that first year they hit it big. So while some winners of the award became superstars (The Beatles, Mariah Carey) others flamed out (Milli Vanilli) and then there were those simply don’t have the longevity the recording academy might have thought (Christopher Cross, Hootie and the Blowfish).

As of this writing, Irish singer-songwriter Hozier is our favorite to win Best New Artist with odds of 7/2 based on the combined predictions of our Users, Top 24 Users (the two dozen folks who got the highest scores predicting last year’s Grammy nominations) and Editors (who cover awards year-round for Gold Derby). Ranked second with 6/1 odds is Meghan Trainor. Country breakout Sam Hunt is third with 15/2 odds.
