Just hours before Emmy voting began, John Oliver igninted a controversy on his HBO show “Last Week Tonight.” This savvy satirist turned his attention to televangelists. He charged them with being “churches that exploit people’s faith for monetary gain.” And to drive home his point, he set up his own church — Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption — with just one purpose: to collect money. But don’t worry: all of the donations will be turned over to Doctors Without Borders, “which provides emergency medical aid in places where it is needed most.”
Two seasons in, this Brit has been a hit with viewers and Emmy voters, who nominated “Last Week Tonight” for Best Variety Talk Series.
Currently, it is ranked fourth in our predictions center, behind three shows that are no longer on the air: “The Colbert Report,” “Late Show with David Letterman” and “The Daily Show.”
