Meryl Streep poll: What’s the best decade of her career so far?

meryl streep oscar

Meryl Streep has had a long and illustrious career and shows no signs of slowing down now in her fifth decade on the big screen, but what do you think has been the best decade of her career so far? She’s picked up a record 19 Oscar nominations, including two in the 1970s, six in the 1980s, four in the 1990s, four in the 2000s and three already in the 2010s. That includes three victories, for her supporting role in “Kramer vs. Kramer” (1979) and lead performances in “Sophie’s Choice” (1982) and “The Iron Lady” (2011). But when was she at her best?

We asked our forum posters to weigh in. Read some of their comments below, join the discussion in our forums here and make sure to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.

Experts’ early Oscar predictions: ‘Joy,’ ‘The Revenant,’ Leo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett …

MladenVukcevic: Plain and simple. “Sophie’s Choice” is a benchmark against which all other brilliance in acting is measured.

GhostOrchid: Her best may be the ’80s, but my favorite are the ’90s (plus somehow the ’00s and ’10s combined).

Babypook: I’d like to believe her “best” works are still ahead of her……and topping herself after “A Cry in the Dark,” “Sophie’s Choice,” “Bridges of Madison County,” etc etc et al, well, if anyone can do this it’s Meryl.

Jake: Wow, I recently thought about it, really! I think the years of 1990s are usually thought as her weakest, despite the fact that she scored four Oscar nominations and 8 (!) Golden Globe noms back then. Yet there’s no doubt that it’s between 1980s and 2000s … In terms of purely personal preference, I’d go with 1990s on behalf of her work in “Death Becomes Her” and “River Wild.”

Mrs. Doolittle: Definitely the ’80s!!! Her iconic performances in “Sophie’s Choice,” “Out of Africa” and “Cry in the Dark” put her on top!!!

Streep has a chance at nomination number-20 this year for “Ricki and the Flash.” Use our drag-and-drop menu at the bottom of this post to let us know if you think she’ll reach that milestone.
