“It is true that everything slows down to a standstill and you can’t really feel your extremities,” Michael Chiklis tells Gold Derby’s Tom O’Neil about his historic Emmy win as Best Drama Actor for “The Shield” (2002). (Watch their webcam chat below.) “It’s really an out-of-body experience, particularly if you’re not ready for it, if you really aren’t prepared. And I was not.”
Chiklis’ shocking victory turned out to be an Emmy breakthrough — the first time that a non-pay cable channel won one of the top Emmy categories.
Now Chiklis is once again in the Emmy spotlight, this time as Best Movie/Mini Supporting Actor for his role on “American Horror Story: Freak Show.” Have you made your Emmy predictions yet? Hurry — make your own predictions now and you could win our $1,000 prize. It’s fun and easy!

Will Chiklis be prepared this time around? According to exclusive Gold Derby odds, he has 11/2 odds of winning his second career Emmy, behind only Bill Murray (“Olive Kitteridge“) who’s out front with 14/5 odds. “Really? Okay. My heart’s racing,” says Chiklis upon hearing his odds.
Regarding his complicated character, strongman Dell Toledo, Chiklis reflects, “[He’s a] 1950s closeted homosexual, tortured, self-hating, suicidal, alcoholic … it was lots of fun to shoot! No, I was in hell every single day shooting that show. [But] it’s the kind of stuff that actors dream about, to get a chance to sink their teeth into.”
Chiklis agrees with O’Neil that we didn’t get enough Twisty the Clown this season. “What a compelling, amazing performance. But it was cut short. Twisty was terrifying. But that’s a testament also to John Carroll Lynch. To do the things that he did in that role and to still be able to garner empathy from an audience is master work.”
