Seven films advance to the final round for the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. From this group, the final three nominees in the category will be determined:
Members of the academy’s Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch will convene on January 9 to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the seven films and vote for the final nominees, which will be announced with all other categories on January 14.
Noteworthy snubs include “The Danish Girl,” which we had ranked highly for a potential nomination for transforming Eddie Redmayne into pioneering transgender woman Lili Elbe. Also absent is “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which critics finally got to see on December 14 and 15 in advance of its hotly anticipated December 18 release. Other films missing: “Carol,” “Cinderella,” “The Hateful Eight,” “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2” and “Pan.”
