All but four of our Oscar Experts predict that “Ida” wll win Best Foreign Language Film. That support gives Pawel Pawlikowski‘s period drama about a young nun who discovers her Jewish heritage leading odds of 1/4. This would be Poland’s first win.
But four of our Oscarologists — Tariq Khan (Fox News), Anne Thompson (Thompson on Hollywood), Jeff Wells (Hollywood-Elsewhere) and Gold Derby’s Tom O’Neil — forecast an upset by the Argentinian entry, “Wild Tales.” Those votes give it odds of 11/2.
“Ida,” which also earned an Oscar bid for Best Cinematography, is one of the most internationally renowned films of the year, winning Best Foreign Film at the BAFTAs, Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and New York Film Critics Circle, and sweeping the European Film Awards.
But “Ida” was defeated by “Leviathan” at the Golden Globes, which have agreed with the Oscars for the last four years, and it lost the Critics’ Choice Award to “Force Majeure,” which the academy didn’t nominate, so “Ida” may be vulnerable.
