Oscars news: ‘Birdman’ vs. ‘Boyhood, Adam Levine to sing ‘Lost Stars’ on Oscars

Surveying the race the PGA and SAG Awards, Sasha Stone says: “Right now, pundits are probably going to predict that ‘Birdman’ will win Best Picture and Richard Linklater (‘Boyhood’) will Best Director. That’s because they won’t want to think an industry could turn so coldly on a film that was that remarkable, that praised, that admired. Surely they won’t send him (or her) home empty-handed. Oh yeah? Just watch them. I won’t buy into the split theory because I’ve been at this bar way too long. Years like last year are rare. So far we’ve seen no industry support for Boyhood so we can’t know if there will be a split. Linklater would have to win the DGA – and I’ll bet you all the rocks in the pocket that Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu will win.” Awards Daily

For Pete Hammond, “the cast win for ‘Birdman’ will get a lot of attention as it is SAG’s version of Best Picture and it comes on the heels of last night’s surprise PGA win for the film. The movie which was not quite the critics choice that ‘Boyhood‘ has been, has come soaring into this Oscar race with big wins at the first two industry awards shows and leaving ‘Boyhood’ (sans Arquette’s win) in its dust.  That cannot be underestimated, and I think it really opens up this race making the February 7th DGA show all that more important.” Deadline

Adam Levine will take time off from coaching on “The Voice” to perform the Oscar-nominated song “Lost Stars” from “Begin Again” on this year’s Feb. 22 kudocast. Levine is the lead singer for the group Maroon 5, which has won three Grammy Awards — two for Best Pop Duo/Group (2005 and 2007) as well as Best New Artist (2004). Levine made his feature film acting debut in the film, which is directed by John Carney and also stars Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo. Oscars

As Gerard Kennedy observes, “Over the past two decades, and the last 15 years in particular, Colleen Atwood has cemented herself as one of Hollywood’s leading costume designers. She’s earned three Oscars and is continually sought after by many leading directors to design threads for a variety of time periods and genres. With ‘Into the Woods,’ she has once again reunited with Rob Marshall for an inimitable blend of period and fantasy.” In Contention

Surveying the five nominees for Best Original Screenplay, the staff distills them into their best lines. First up for consideration is “Birdman” by Alejandro G. Inarritu, Nicolas Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris Jr., Armando Bo. Riggan: “I never should have videotaped Sam’s birth; first of all, because you and Sam both look like shit in that video, but mostly because I missed the moment. I should have just been there with the two of you. Present in my own life. So I’d have it. But I don’t. I don’t have any of it.” THR
