Just before contending for an Emmy Award at Saturday night’s Creative Arts ceremony, composer Bear McCreary chatted with Gold Derby about his nomination for Best Score (Series) for Starz’ “Outlander” (watch below). McCreary is a previous Emmy winner for his Main Title Theme for “DaVinci’s Demons” (2013) and has competed twice more in that category with “Human Target” (2010) and “Black Sails” (2014).

Speaking about the show’s passionate fans, McCreary notes, “I saw a group of them at the corner holding signs with my name with a plaid backdrop. I rolled down the window and yelled ‘Outlander!’ and they freaked out. I’m not unfamiliar with fandom, having worked on ‘Battlestar Galactica’ and ‘The Walking Dead’ and ‘Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.’ But the ‘Outlander’ fandom is a different demographic and their passion about it is just different. They’ve loved these books for 20 years and they feel a sense of ownership of it that I am very respectful of.”

“I think they gave me the benefit of the doubt. They’ve been wonderful. They’ve been very supportive,” McCreary adds. Later that evening, McCreary lost the music composition Emmy to Jeff Beal for “House of Cards,” but “Outlander” fans have their fingers crossed for a rematch next year.
