Will TV’s reigning comedy champs from the Emmys all repeat at this year’s Screen Actors Guild Awards? Gold Derby’s odds-makers think so, as they’re predicting that HBO’s “Veep” will win the SAG for Best TV Comedy Ensemble, Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”) will prevail as Best TV Comedy Actress and Jeffrey Tambor (“Transparent”) will triumph as Best TV Comedy Actor.
Nominations for the 22nd SAG Awards will be announced by Anna Faris (“Mom”) and Anthony Mackie (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier”) on Wednesday at 7 a.m. PT / 10 a.m. ET.
According to exclusive Gold Derby odds that are derived from the predictions made by our Editors (website staff editors), Top 24 Users (the two dozen folks who did the best predicting last year’s nominations) and other Users just like you, “Veep” is in first place to win TV’s Comedy Ensemble race with leading 7/2 odds.
“Veep” is coming off back-to-back ensemble nominations at the SAG Awards, though the political laffer has yet to win the big prize after being bested by ABC’s “Modern Family” in 2013 and Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black” last year.
Both of those comedies are nipping at “Veep’s” heals in our rankings, as reigning champ “Orange” is in second place to repeat with 5/1 odds and “Modern Family” is in third place with 6/1 odds. “Modern Family” already made history in this category with four victories (2010-13) and hopes to break its own record with trophy #5.
Other top contenders for Best TV Comedy Ensemble: “Transparent” is in fourth place with 15/2 odds and then there’s a tie for fifth place between “Silicon Valley” and “The Big Bang Theory” with 14/1 odds apiece. SEE MORE
Louis-Dreyfus has leading 3/1 odds to win her fourth individual SAG Award for Best Comedy Actress, after victories for “Seinfeld” (1996 and 1997) and “Veep” (2013). Her closest rival is the woman who beat her last year: Uzo Aduba (“Orange is the New Black”) with 5/1 odds. Aduba is on a hot streak right now; besides winning the SAG and Emmy for this role, she also just starred in NBC’s live production of “The Wiz.”
Other top contenders for Best TV Comedy Actress: Lily Tomlin (“Grace and Frankie”) is in third place with 15/2 odds, Allison Janney (“Mom”) is in fourth place with 9/1 odds and Amy Poehler (“Parks and Recreation”) is in fifth place with 10/1 odds. SEE MORE
While Tambor is the frontrunner to win Best Comedy Actor with leading 14/5 odds, it’s worth noting that last year “Transparent” was completely snubbed across the board. Perhaps SAG voters are simply late to the party, as they were with honoring past favorites “Homeland” and “Breaking Bad”? Last year’s winner William H. Macy (“Shameless”) is the runner-up with 6/1 odds, but can even he take down Tambor, who won at the Golden Globes, Emmys and Critics Choice Awards for this role?
Other top contenders for Best TV Comedy Actor: Jim Parsons (“The Big Bang Theory”) is in third place with 8/1 odds, Ty Burrell (“Modern Family”) is in fourth place with 17/2 odds and Will Forte (“The Last Man on Earth”) is in fifth place with 12/1 odds. SEE MORE
