Dancers Derek Piquette (Team Stage) and Ariana Crowder (Team Street) escaped elimination by the skin of their teeth on “So You Think You Can Dance” Monday night. First, they landed in the bottom three. Then Twitter users voted to save contestants, but let them down again. It came down to the judges, who chose Derek over poor Darion Flores and Ariana over her teammate Lily Frias. After that close brush with reality-TV death, should they be concerned for next week?
Derek and Ariana danced together on Monday night, performing a jazz routine that received praise from the judges (watch it below). Paul Abdul said Ariana “nailed it” and that Derek had “perfect” technique, though she added that they both need to work on selling their performances on an emotional level. Jason Derulo was surprised by how “phenomenal” Ariana was. Nigel Lythgoe was also impressed, but cautioned Derek that he dances with an expression like “peeling onions.” Did they do enough to survive next week?
It’s possible that their fans will rally behind them after their close call. It may also help them to have danced with each other instead of with higher-profile partners who might have overshadowed them; that’s what happened to Darion, who was eliminated after performing with “SYTYCD” frontrunner Jim Nowakowski during the first live performance show.
Ariana should be especially worried according to our latest predictions. She and Eddie Eskridge are tied as the frontrunners for elimination from Team Street, both getting 9/4 odds. Meanwhile, Derek ranks fourth with 8/1 odds for Team Stage; our users think Moises Parra will be the stage performer to get the axe instead.
