‘So You Think You Can Dance’ shocker: Jim Nowakowski eliminated with Megz Alfonso

Ballet dancer Jim Nowakowski was the frontrunner in the early weeks of “So You Think You Can Dance” according to the predictions of our users, and the judges consistently praised him as the best technical dancer on the show, but Nigel Lythgoe warned that the best technical dancer isn’t always America’s favorite dancer. Nigel was right. After Jim struggled to connect to the character of his dances for the last two weeks, America sent him home instead of Team Stage teammate Hailee Payne, whom we thought would get the boot after finishing in the bottom two last week.

The Team Street elimination was more predictable. The vast majority of us expected that Megz Alfonso wouldn’t be able to get past the dynamic duo of Virgil Gadson and Jaja Vankova, and indeed she was ousted along with a tearful Nowakowski. That leaves three women and one man left for next week’s final performance show, when the top four – Gadson, Vankova, Payne and Gaby Diaz – will perform to win this season’s title.

Since the top four finalists were announced in random order at the end of Monday night’s show, no one was in the bottom but safe, an outcome that tripped up many of our predictors – myself included – but four users still managed to correctly predict 100% of this week’s outcomes: LSKILDUM, Benutty, Paltonz and Erfrank. Of those, LSKILDUM had the highest points total (7,850), which puts him at the very top of our leaderboard this week.

He racked up most of those points by using his 500-point big bet to predict that there would be no one at the bottom but safe for Team Stage at 10/1 odds, resulting in a 5,000 point payout. It goes to show you that when forecasting reality TV, you can count on “No One.”

On our overall leaderboard, Michael Jenkins, aka “EmmyLoser,” extends his lead to 57% accuracy after seven weeks of predictions (up from 54% last week). He’s followed by Denton Davidson, Benutty and JB with 46% for the season so far. Now that we’re at the home stretch of the competition, can any of them catch Jenkins to become our “So You Think You Can Dance” predictions champ for season 12?

There’s one last predictions event this season. The final four will perform next week with a winner to be crowned on September 14, so you have two weeks to predict the final outcomes: who will win, who will finished second, who will finish third and who will finish fourth.

As of Monday night’s show, Diaz had skyrocketed to a tie for first place with Vankova in our predictions. Both had 17/10 odds based on support from 37% of users, followed by Gadson with 20/1 odds and 5% of users predicting him and Payne with 33/1 odds and the backing of 3% of users. Did Monday night’s performances change your mind about any of them? Are we underestimating Gadson or Payne? Will Diaz pull ahead of Vankova?

At the end of each week, the eligible user with the highest prediction accuracy and most points will win a $100 Amazon gift certificate, so it’s beneficial to keep coming back often and making/updating your predictions.
