5 reasons why Joe Anglim’s elimination is a GOOD thing for ‘Survivor: Worlds Apart’

Wednesday’s elimination of Joe Anglim is the most important development in what was becoming a rather monotonously-toned second act of “Survivor: Worlds Apart” revolving around “how to beat Joe.” With him out of the game, we can begin the third and final act of what I hope will live up to Jeff Probst‘s declaration that this is one of the best seasons ever. Hurry — make your predictions for next week’s episode and you could win our prize of a $100 Amazon gift certificate. It’s fun and easy, so start now by scrolling down and predicting who will be eliminated next.

Survivor: Worlds Apart’ recap: Did Joe Anglim and Jenn Brown survive Episode 9?

As a clear fan favorite, Joe’s presence will be missed, but here’s why I think his exit is exactly what the audience needed:

1.) Everyone’s main target is gone.
The Merica tribe was unified by one thing: the desire to vote Joe out. With him gone a new “biggest threat” must come into focus — watch out, Tyler Fredrickson and Mike Holloway — and the glue holding everyone together will begin to give way.

2.) Anyone can win Immunity.
Joe was great at challenges, both mental and physical. Without him as competition, Immunity is truly up for grabs and I imagine we’ll see the castaways enter each challenge with the confidence it takes to win.

3.) Jenn and Shirin are free agents.
Without Joe, Jenn Brown and Shirin Oskooi are a much less threatening minority alliance and become crucial swing votes in an inevitable Blue Collar mutiny. If Jenn can’t move beyond her desire to quit on her own, I suspect Shirin is smart enough to help her realize how greatly their status has improved.

4.) Hidden Immunity idol paranoia.
Joe’s desperate fashioning of a fake idol makes it clear that Joe, Jenn and Shirin did not have a real one and will unleash the paranoia over who does. Only Tyler knows about Carolyn’s and presumably only Mike knows about his, but the strategy surrounding when they’ll be used will cause votes at future Tribal Councils to develop in unpredictable ways.

5.) Rodney vs. Mike will finally happen.
The tension between Rodney Lavoie and Mike has been building all season and now that they no longer need each other to get Joe out, this particular crack in the alliance will finally break.

Congratulations to our user Sunhound for winning this week’s episode contest. If eligible, this reader will win a $100 Amazon gift certificate for reaping 80% accuracy and a 50,364 point score when predicting Episode 9, titled “Livin’ on the Edge.” See contest rules.

Sunhound’s winning predictions were that Joe would be voted out, that a hidden Immunity idol would not be played, that nobody would quit the game, and that Dan Foley, Shirin Oskooi, Sierra Thomas, Mike Holloway and Tyler Fredrickson would all win the Reward challenge. He only missed out on predicting who’d win the Immunity challenge, forecasting Jenn instead of the actual champ Tyler.

Joe was ranked first in Gold Derby’s predictions to go home with final odds of 17/10 (click on the left-hand chart for the episode’s full odds). Sunhound put his 200 point bet on that prediction and netted 320 points. However, he nabbed an astounding 50,000 points by correctly calling all five of this week’s Reward challenge winners with his special 500 point bet: Wow!

Whose torch do you think will be snuffed next? Be sure to visit our predictions center and make/update your forecasts before voting closes Wednesday at 5 p.m. PT. The user with the highest prediction accuracy and most points will win a $100 Amazon gift certificate.

‘Survivor: Worlds Apart’ predictions: Is Mike Holloway dark horse to win?

Where do you fall on our overall Season 30 leaderboard?

After a flip-flop battle between Smartdude and Taloson for first place, Smartdude took the lead again this week. His overall season accuracy is now 67%, just ahead of Taloson who’s at 66%. Talk about a true nail-biter!

Benutty is just behind our frontrunners in third place with 65% accuracy, while this week’s episode leader Sunhound is in fourth place with 62% and JasonNolette is in fifth place with 56%.

Can YOU beat these frontrunners to win our prizes? Then be sure to take part in our “Survivor” prediction contest. We’re giving away $100 Amazon gift certificates to our weekly winners plus at season’s end. The deadline for each episode is Wednesday at 5 p.m. PT.

Our current overall leader Smartdude predicted Joe’s elimination this week. However, he didn’t even have Hali in his predictions to get the boot in Episode 8 (see complete predix), proving that it’s possible to do well in our contests without getting everything right.

Remember that coming out on top doesn’t just mean answering that week’s questions correctly. You also have to use your three big bets (500 points and two of 200 points) strategically to score the most game points. If you bet on a longshot who pulls off an upset, you can really rack up the points, so don’t take them for granted.

To vote for who think will go home next on “Survivor,” drag contestants over from the left to the right and arrange them in your predicted order. For example, if you think Jenn will be eliminated, make sure you put her in first place.
