When Melissa McCarthy won the Emmy for “Mike and Molly” in 2011, awards pundits wondered if her mega success in the film “Bridesmaids” helped push her over the edge. Could a similar fate happen to Amy Schumer this year? The Comedy Central star was nominated for four Emmys last week for acting, producing, writing and directing her variety series “Inside Amy Schumer,” just as her new comedy film “Trainwreck” opened to a boffo $30 million weekend. Talk about perfect timing.
The funny lady to beat is, of course, Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”), who’s won this category three years in a row and has leading odds of 9/10. Second place goes to Amy Poehler (“Parks and Recreation”), who has odds of 4/1 to win her first-ever Emmy.
The other category Gold Derby is predicting that is of interest to Schumer and her fans is Best Variety Sketch Series. This is a brand new category at the Emmys, so anything could happen; however, as of this writing our odds-makers foresee a clear victory for “Inside Amy Schumer.” It has overwhelming 3/10 odds to win, with its closest competitor being 40-year-old “Saturday Night Live” with odds of 9/2.
The critics agree. Schumer won Best Comedy Actress in a bit of an upset at the recent Critics’ Choice TV Awards and she’s nominated for two awards (actress and series) at the upcoming Television Critics Association kudos.
