Last year’s big comedy winner at the Golden Globes was “Transparent,” which took home Best TV Comedy as well as Comedy Actor for Jeffrey Tambor. Will this Amazon darling repeat again for its second season, or might laffers like “Orange is the New Black” or “Veep” claim their first trophies? According to exclusive Gold Derby odds that are derived from the predictions made by our Editors (website staff editors), Top 24 Users (the two dozen folks who did the best predicting last year’s nominations) and other Users just like you, “Transparent” currently leads the race for Best Comedy Series with 4/1 odds.
However, the fact that “Transparent” won last year actually might hurt it at the Globes, as they’re notorious for spreading the wealth. The only comedy to win back-to-back series prizes in the past 10 years was “Glee” (2009, 2010).
If “Transparent” loses, our odds-makers expect “Orange,” which has odds of 6/1, to finally claim its first series prize. The show contended as a drama series for its inaugural run at the Globes in 2013 and ended up getting snubbed in the series race (though star Taylor Schilling did reap a bid). “Orange” switched over to the comedy categories last year and earned its first series bid, but couldn’t secure the victory.
And what about the reigning Emmy champ “Veep”? Its Globes odds are 13/2, good enough for third place, but it’s important to note that the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association don’t really care for shows about American politics the same way that the Emmys do. For example, while “The West Wing” won four series prizes at the Emmys, the Globes only awarded it once (2000).
Other top comedy series in contention are: “Silicon Valley” (9/1 odds) for its second season, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” (12/1 odds) for its freshman outing and “The Last Man on Earth” (14/1 odds) for both Seasons 1 and 2. See up-to-date Golden Globe odds and rankings for this race right here.
