‘Virunga’ to Oscar voters: Last chance to save our wild life [New trailer]

Virungacurrently ranks second in our Oscar odds for Best Documentary Feature, getting 12/1 odds behind longtime frontrunner “Citizenfour” with 1/5 odds, but could there be an upset? Just three years ago, the uplifting sports documentary “Undefeated” pulled off a surprise against true-crime saga “Paradise Lost 3” and the dance biography “Pina.”

Executive produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, “Virunga” documents efforts to protect the Congo’s Virunga National Park from encroaching rebel forces and an energy company looking to exploit its natural resources. The film returned to theaters on January 30 at the Cinema Village in New York and Laemmle Music Hall in Los Angeles. It also continues to stream exclusively on Netflix.

This is the second consecutive Oscar nomination for a Netflix documentary, following 2013’s “The Square,” which documented the Egyptian revolution. That film was bested by the music documentary “20 Feet from Stardom.”

Will “Virunga” pull off an upset? “Consider” their new trailer below, then watch our recent interview with director Orlando von Einsiedel, and use our drag-and-drop menu to make your predictions.
