The 2016 American Music Awards continue a decade-long rivalry between superstars Beyonce and Rihanna for Favorite Soul/R&B Female Artist. Since 2007 the award has gone to one or the other every year. Rihanna won five times (2007, 2008, 2010, 2013, 2015), which makes her the most awarded woman in this category. Beyonce trails with four (2009, 2011, 2012, 2014), but it looks like she’ll will close the gap this year. She’s the frontrunner to win according to our predictions contest entrants. Beyonce is the heavy favorite with 8/11 odds of winning. That’s thanks in no small part to her critically acclaimed album “Lemonade,” which was a dominant cultural force in 2016 and recently powered Queen Bey to a sweep of another fan-voted award: the MTV Video Music Awards, where she won eight, setting a new record for the most victories by any artist in VMA history. If the fans loved her there, they’ll love her here too, right?
Not so fast. Rihanna trails in second place with 10/3 odds, but she actually won their last head-to-head match-up last year. And there’s another sign that Rihanna could be more popular than Beyonce this year: when fan voters narrowed down the top 10 Artist of the Year contenders to the final five, Rihanna made the cut, but Beyonce didn’t. And Rihanna has won more AMAs in her career (nine) than Beyonce has (six), so perhaps this event is really Rihanna’s domain.
Rounding out this category is legendary R&B star Janet Jackson with 9/2 odds. This is her first nomination in this category since 2004, but she is a two-time winner (1991, 1999). Is her fan base still passionate enough to compete against the legions of Beyonce and Rihanna devotees?
