Adele swept the 2016 Billboard Music Awards, which aired live on May 22 on ABC. She took Top Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album (“25“) and Top Selling Song (“Hello”) among her multiple prizes, but she also took the opportunity to premiere a new video for “Send My Love (To Your New Lover).” It’s her first official new video since “Hello” reintroduced her to the music scene seven months ago.
“Send My Love” is a break-up song, but it’s more conciliatory than, say, “Rolling in the Deep,” her scorching kiss-off that won her Grammys for Record and Song of the Year in 2011. In her new song she wishes a former lover well in his new romance: “We’ve gotta let go of all of our ghosts. We both know we ain’t kids no more.”
Do you think “Send My Love” is as good as “Hello”? That was by far her most successful video, with more than 1.5 billion views. That cinematic clip was directed by precocious Canadian filmmaker Xavier Dolan (“Mommy”). The new clip, shot against a plain black backdrop, is helmed by Patrick Daughters, who previously directed videos for Yeah Yeah Yeahs, KT Tunstall and Beck. He also earned a Grammy nomination for Best Music Video in 2007 for Feist‘s “1234.”
