“Boo! A Madea Halloween” was released on October 21, the latest in a long line of comedies starring writer-director Tyler Perry as the no-nonsense title character. The film will likely appeal to Perry’s already devoted fan following, but probably not to many critics. In fact, Perry generally doesn’t screen his films for critics at all, and “Boo!” is no exception. Does that mean it’ll also be another Razzie Awards contender?
In 2012 “Madea’s Witness Protection” was nominated for five Razzies including three for Perry: Worst Actress (for performing in drag), Worst Screen Couple (shared with his drag costume) and Worst Director (for “Witness Protection” as well as the Madea-free “Good Deeds”). But Razzie voters mercifully spared Perry, who didn’t win any of his nominations.
The very next year “A Madea Christmas” picked up six nominations including Worst Picture. That time Perry won Worst Actress, which made him the second man to win that award for a female role; Adam Sandler had previously pulled off that ignoble feat, taking both Worst Actress and Worst Actor for playing twins in “Jack and Jill” in 2011.
In “Boo,” Madea’s latest holiday adventure, she battles killers, ghosts, and zombies while supervising unruly teens. Will this be the Madea film that finally wins Worst Picture? Vote in our poll below, and discuss the Razzies and more in our movie forum.
